Tour to Ooty

Dedicated to my BPL friends – Mohideen Saad

I have always thought of, whenever I browse through my old tour photographs, how it would be if there is some description notes for that particular tour. This is my long time desire to create such a thing, so that we can make those instants memorable and lively, when we look back, at a later time.

But simply the story alone does not make any effect. Some people cannot correlate the event stories and the photographs separately and some do not wish to read pages of passages. So I thought it would be good to describe the tour along with related photographs. This will certainly instigate the people to read, however big the note is. The reading may not be immediate. But at a later time of life, or during leisure, the reading is certain.

This is the first time my desire and dream has taken shape.

First, thanks to God, the Almighty, for giving this tour as a gift to us.

I have to thank all those involved in this tour, for making it so special, that really inspired me to do this work.

Special thanks to Anu, Ajith and Sandeep for organizing this tour.

I thank Sandeep, Sandhya and Shamna for their support and encouragement and in particular their valuable review of this work. Besides them I thank all those who encouraged and helped me to bring back certain moments of the tour.

I thank Sandeep especially, for his encouragement and relentless motivation.

Special thanks to Sanush, for creating such a wonderful cover, making this article more attractive.

Not to the least, I thank all those photographers who, collectively, did not leave a single instant from being recorded in their cameras, in this tour.

I hope you would like this work.

Regards,

Mohideen Saad.

                     The Journey Begins..

An unusual assembly, at the gate of BPL Telecom Pvt Limited, at the dawn of8th March 2009 around3:50 am. We the BPLites are on the start of an excursion to Ooty.

“Has everyone arrived?”, was the question asked by everyone arrived, to others. “A few didn’t yet” will be the answer other than “I don’t know”.

“Did Varun bring the food?”, asked by another. “Yes he brought. What in the world is more important to him than food?”

“Praveen cheta! Did you bring water?” asked Sandeep.

“Hayyo! It is in the car”, Praveen replied and walked towards the parking lot inside the company and I accompanied him.

“What to do? Should we want to carry? No let’s take it along with the car”. I nodded to Praveen and we came to the gate again, with the car, to deliver the water.

“Ho! You have brought the car itself”, said Sandeep.

“This is more easy than bringing it by hand”, replied Praveen.

The car was turned back to the parking lot.

Then came the Taxi No: 7777. Inside it, as usual, the dwellers of House: 312, with the very same driver Jerin George, who is the owner too.

“We are on time man”, everyone arrived, to the other.

Sandeep started filling the list of members of the tour.

Then arrived Anu along with Ajith and members of his house, escorting Girls. It was “Hi”, everywhere.

Then came Sankar and his wife. Yes they are dropped by their uncle. A little lesser than like school kids, except they are husband and wife.

“What is this Sreegesh? Your student has got married before you”. I asked to Sreegesh.

“Hush! Make it private, before somebody notices’. Sreegesh escaped.

“And what about Sajith and wife?”

“Sajithetan is on the way. Will be reaching in five minutes”, Anu replied.

By the time, Haridas has started his comments teasing everyone, creating the tour mood.

“Hey everyone has come with a bag”, he pointed to Sudeep’s bag.

Then towards me. “What is that rope around your shoulder?” I showed my bag. The team laughed again.

Sankar is busy introducing his wife to the girls, while Sajith arrived.

Now the girls has got a new company, Sajith’s wife Sunitha. For Madhuri, Sankar’s wife, she is her Kodaikanal friend.

Finally everyone had arrived and “Let’s start”. Everybody got into the bus.

“Hey where is Lenin”.

“Lenin will board fromCoimbatore”.

Everybody seated and the attendance recording started. Anu called out the names to check their presence. Here we go.

The game has started with the dance, the first thing of our tour.

The noisy music creeping the silent highway at the early hours of the day. But for us it is a tour enjoyment.

There roamed a packet of chips inside the bus. “Hey Anu has started his R&D work of distributing foodstuffs”, commented a kiddy. “For your information, this was sponsored by Shamna (the Police)”, Anu announced. “That is her fresher treat”. “Is it? That is too less to be a treat”, comments crawled over the bus one by one.

Then there started the ceremony. Of course, what other than liquor. The barrels headed backwards.

The great dancers on list are Ajith, Jerin, Jibin, Sajith, Anu, Sandeep, Sreegesh, ArunKV and it goes on with some more temps.

Loaded with songs and dance, the bus came to a halt on request, in Coimbatore.

Yes this is to receive our Monster of Patience(hope you remember that “Learn it from Lenin”), Lenin Bharathy, the silent killer of anger. A warm welcome filled with applause alerted the coimbatore city. What a generous personality.I think that’s more than enough for him. He clinged himself to the clank.

It takes just half an hour from there to Mettupalayam. The way towards Mettupalayam, was not so busy, though not so lull. The sides of the road, the left side in particular, were full of industries, mostly IT.

We reached Mettupalayam at around 6:20 am.

There is a need for a small walk from the Bus Stand to the Railway Station. So what can we do with our food parcels. You cannot rely on Varun to bring it up to the Railway Station. His responsibility had ended at BPL itself. Also it is not a good idea to give him the complete responsibility over food. Who is ready to be hungry through out the journey. Certainly it may happen if you do so.

“We can give the parcel to the individual”. This was consented.

Here comes a spectacular moment of the tour. The parcel distribution from the bus to the people would make anyone to think that there is some charity going on. Thanks to the early morning, for which the beggars would have overwhelmed us otherwise.

Sandhya’s role is commendable in distributing the parcels. May be she had an experience already. One thing short in her hand was a stick, without which she was not able able to align us in a queue. Thank God.

While the rest moved towards the station, the barrels stayed back to booze.

I accompanied Haridas towards the Railway Station.

A spectacular scene. People consuming their parcels before somebody snaps the scene.
Let’s leave it here.

The train was on the platform when we reached the station. Only the coaches, without the engine. We are really very eager to see the steam engine.

A black beauty stormed the station with its presence. I am speaking about the steam engine. An anatomy of the engine gives a completely black figure with a biodata chart pasted over. It spirited our enthusiasm by its frequently howling whistle and fuming steam exhausts. The smoke was both black and white. One can view the piled mass of coal at the back side of the engine.

The entire team awaiting journey, rolled around the train as a kind of exhibition. Flashes from the cameras lit the entire station, before the timely arrival of the natural light, completely.

The next scene is the union of the engine with the coach train. The engine moved straight towards the back side of the train coaches. This is a push from behind train. There was a slight to and fro when the engine adjoined the coach train. This is something not unusual.

Photographs again in every possible pose. The train behind, the train sideways, coach get on and get off poses, individual, in group, with a smile, with sunglasses, posing with a tea, etc. The platform is overwhelmed with cameramen, photographs and posers.

Now the train is about to start. The TTE started verifying the tickets. We did not expect the TTE to ask for identification proof though it is on rule. Here we escaped a Curious Case of Lenin Bharathy. Lenin by nature, a male, missed his identity as a male in the ticket. Had the TTE recognized it, Lenin might have been in a miserable situation amidst the crowd to prove his maleness or to provide a female identity proof. The TTE did not notice and our journey started pleasantly.

The bell rang, whistle blown, the train started its journey. The beauty pageant, the engine, leads us from behind.

In a hurry most of us forgot the left side of the train, wherein will be the valley mostly. Exceptions are a few including Praveen, Shajahan, Sanush, the photographer. May be it is their luck. What can I say? But Shajahan agreed to give his seat whenever I need to take a click.

Influenced with a childish waving at strangers passing by the sides, initially, we started to feel the reality about the amorphous journey, we had in our mind. Yasar waved at a woman outside and turned back with embarrassment is a thing to be noted. I did not notice the real cause of his embarrassment.

It is food again. Our team started distributing the snacks they brought. Sweet and sour. Thanks to Sajith and Sunitha. But the problem was not far. We emptied the water we have taken.

The first station was Kallar. The train halted here for sometime. This kind of halt was there throughout the journey, until we reached Coonoor. The real reason behind it is not for us to enjoy nature. But to refill the steam engine with water. It allowed us to watch around the station.

The train started moving. Here all our enthusiasms started shaping its reality. “Nilgiri Mountain Railway Welcomes You”, the board read. A sudden jerk of the train thrilled us into an unimaginable experience. The track differed from the previous one with an added middle chain, for the hold of the train, while on slopes.

A jerk forward and a jerk backward started to characterize our journey. Cameras started taking its course through every window, not leaving even a little pleasing moment of nature. The scars of the previous week forest fires were found everywhere. We are the chosen people of God’s mercy, not to miss the train cancelled, out of devastating forest fires, the week before.

In between, the scores of comments, the cheering moments of the tour enjoyment inside the train, left the nature lovers in a dilemma of what to choose. But in realism, there were no green left on the mountains and the scene was not so pleasing, as expected, thanks to the forest fires. So participating in both the pleasures did not become much difficult. Mostly we all are involved in the commendable enjoyment we created inside the train and we just spread out in case of an appearance of a tunnel or a bridge or something that really please us.

“Saad, I’ve bought a new mobile phone”, Sujina enjoined herself into the entertainment.

The entire team yawled, on request, for Sujina’s new mobile. A big “HO”.

The next halt of the train was not at any station. It was on the midway to refill the engine.

This halt came just before a tunnel. This enthused the photographers to enjoy the halt. We all got down and were busy marking our shadows in every photograph.

Sanush’s role as a photographer is remarkable. You can understand this if you have a look at all the photographs taken. He’ll be the only person missing in most of the photographs. Then comes Sandeep and Jerin placing their ranks also in the list of best photography.

Here we had quite a few group photographs. While posing in a group, with the guys standing over the terrace and the girls standing in ground level, Sunitha and Madhuri really hesitated at first. But I think it is not a hesitation and it is out of a simple fear to cross those scraps over the ground. Then they too joined with us. Sandhya rebelled against girls standing amidst the scraps for fear of snakes. We too feared it. But the snakes may be so alert. They do not want to risk their lives by biting our girls. Sanush sacrificed his image in that photograph.

Here I missed walking into the tunnel, for it is one my aspirations over a long time. Anyway I won’t miss it again, if I get a chance. I have to thank Preman and Praveen for making me to be spotted before the tunnel, in a photograph.

The whistle was blown, indicating the water refilling job is over. We hurried into the coaches. It is quite appeasing to see a train waiting for passengers to get in. Normally after the siren every train starts immediately. But here the train blows the whistle prompting us to get in and then starts the journey, when we all have got in; just like that happens in a bus or a private vehicle.

The train moved. Anyone would disagree if we say; it was the intense heat that really bothered us. We became tired very soon. We do not have any water left. We have to wait for the next station to wet out throats. There are two foreigners in our coach from then. They started enjoying our merriment. Then began the dance.

“Somebody please sing a song, Sajithettan will dance”, cried a voice.

Sajith got ready along with Jibin and Anu for a dance. The song of course, was chorus. The foreigners would really have enjoyed this. They captured these scenes completely both in their still and moving cameras.

“Jain throw your presence here man”, the crowd requested. Jain moved to front and sang for the dancers and the rest. Jibin did his part with some entertaining rhythms.

“Chayya chayya chayya” was the next song, with the only and unending “chayya chayya” chant alone. Then it was Mithya with a Hindi song.

“Hey Jerin! Come on here for a dance yaar”, yelled the whole team.

“Somebody sing a song”. But nobody started.

Then in a chorus to resemble Jerin “Aadu paambe, adaadu paambe”, was sung with Jerin dancing like a snake. That’s really amusing.

The panorama outside the train, perhaps were not missed in our entertainment. We had a frequent jump towards the windows, whenever prompted for it and never missed any such instance in our cameras.

Tired out of thirst, we moved to our next program, songs. Anthaakshari would be a good idea always. But, how to split the team? Front and back or left and right. Both are unacceptable, as always one team overweighed the other. Then left and right splitting was chosen with a small rearrangement of the singers. And what to sing? Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi. It was consented. I belonged to the left side team.

Anu, who belonged to the right side, fired the inaugural song. The strength of that team are Anu, Haridas, Mithya, Jain, Ajith and the chorus. The strength of the left side team are Jincy, Sandhya, Sandeep, the chorus and hah myself, at difficult times with my Tamil songs.

Slowly we started to crack those mountain ranges with our horribly sung beautiful songs. Though they did not understand, we thought the foreigners really liked it. They shot almost every one of us playing the game.

Slowly and horribly we reached the station Hillgrove. Something greenish started to appear on our way from then. The engine went on its usual job of refilling its water. We are pleased to see a canteen and jumped out to break our fast. You can get South Indian special vada from the canteen. But really it is not that good in taste. But just for fun, you can have one. If you are not alert then you’ll be left with none. I caution you about the monkeys seen in this station. So many to number. Trying to find any loophole to grab every eatable from your hand. But eventually, they did not grab anything from anyone of us. We the people of the train, may be, are so kind to them. We started enjoying, giving our food to them and watch them catch it when we throw the food at them. But they are really cautious. Once the food falls on the ground, they did not try to pick that, fearing we may harm them.

Quite a good number of photos are taken from here. A tree little far with violet coloured flowers attracted us. But the bridge before the tree stopped us from approaching it. Anyway Sandeep, Varun and I tried to break the fear, by nearing the tree. But unfortunately, the whistle was blown and we started running the other side, towards the train. But we all approached the tree, from inside the train, when it crossed the bridge.

Resuming the game, Anthaakshari. The foreigners do not want to disturb us, though we do not feel disturbed. Who knows we should have pushed them to intolerable limits with our horrifying songs. They moved to the last seats of the coach friendly.

By this time, not to miss those pleasant views outside, I slipped backwards. I got Abubucker and Shajahan, from whose windows I’ve taken my clicks. Noushad and Vineeth who are in front of us did participate in the game, while Jerin, Preman, Praveen started clicking their admirations. Sanush in the far end from my side of the coach already was in the middle of his photography. Sandeep joined occasionally. But then also, if something beautiful appears, jump to the window was adopted by everyone.

The game was a talent expo for ArunKJ, Jain, Jincy, Haridas. Mostly the songs were Malayalam. But during critical times, when they are not able to pick the Malayalam songs, Mithya babbled her Hindi songs, while I did for my team with Tamil songs. Sankar and Sajith were with their wives part of the time and departed them quite often to embrace the game.

The train made a halt at a pleasant area. It is a small valley with lush green, first of its kind in this journey. Who can protect the cameras from swallowing this beauty. It was smile everywhere around, posing for photographs. Ooty has started delighting us with her pleasure, the tea garden on both sides of the valley. A river flowing with little, but enough water on the left side of the train, after which are the slopes of tea garden. On the right side too, it is the tea garden wrapping the blue train with a green cover. A small bridge in front of the train, which abridges the gap provided for the water from the mini falls, on the right side towards the left side, to join into the river.

The train whistled asking us to get in to continue the journey, but only after filling its stomach with water.

Then we continued with our Anthaakshari. One by one, we are all tired, when we reached Coonoor at around 11:45 A.M. The trained halted here for sometime not to refill its water, but to change the engine. The train was fitted with a diesel engine at Coonoor. For the rest of the journey it will be diesel engine and you will miss all the halts which you enjoyed past the trip. One should care mostly their seats, for the people will get into the reserved compartments from Coonoor mistaking it as unreserved. But no need to quarrel, they will move their way out on request, if there is no seat.

The train started from Coonoor and moved backwards towards downhill. But that is really to change the track. The speed of the train till then was an average of 10-12 Km/Hr. From then it moved with a good speed. The forest fires didn’t even spare the mountain tops.

Now the Anthaakshari was stopped. People are tired and bored to sing any further. This paved the way for others to start enjoying the journey, may be. Prince started his nap along with Jibin, which gave picture to some filthy photographs of the tour.

The train crossed Wellington, Aravankadu stations with a halt but not more than a minute or a half. Then it touched Ketti. This was the place which we planned at first for sight seeing. But later on, we agreed with only Ooty, for it is only one day.

At the Ketti station, during the mini halt, Lenin attempted to get down to the platform, defying the team, who requested not to get down. But as soon as he opened the door, the TTE shouted, prompting him to come back ashamed, as if nothing has happened. We burst out into laugh looking at this.

Jincy sang one solo song. Then Anu self proclaimed his solo singing. We agreed. He did not stop with one song. We asked him to go ahead with as many, because for us, his expressions are more amusing than the aversion created by his songs. Certain expressions have shown that he is unbearable towards his own songs as you see here.

The train crossed Lovedale station and as it moved on, there appeared a picturesque lake. Some images filled in the camera eventhough the train moved faster. We assumed that we are nearing the Ooty railway station. The station appeared. There was a huge crowd in the platform. Without leaving any way for us to get down, the crowd attempted to enter inside the train. We endured until we came out.

We arranged the same bus for our Ooty sight seeing also. With a hope that the bus would wait outside, we moved out of the station. The bus arrived shortly as we reached out. The first plan was lunch. The driver has taken us to a moderate restaurant. We had our food. Then we were busy choosing the spot to visit. The choice of Dodabetta was left over as the bus cannot go up to the peak. So the nearest Botanical Garden was chosen. We had a walk from the restaurant towards Botanical Garden in two groups. Everyone assembled at the entrance of the Botanical Garden.

The garden draped in green smiled, without much flowers. We just walked around initially, in a mood of browsing through the entire garden, leaving no room for anything to be missed. After finishing the first two in-house gardens, our aspirations were in vain, on one side due to the inadequate plants to satisfy us and on the other side due to fatigue caused out of the long journey.

A few of us decided to relax for a while over the lawn under any tree shadow. The rest, one group consisting of the girls and a few guys accompanying them and the other group fully guys started moving in different directions.

The lawn is the entry attraction for the tourists. Most of the people were lying down over there in every shadow. Kids having a good play, around there, playing different games. Young couples admired this area by expressing their love for one another. Lovers roll around chit-chatting with their loved ones. One really can relax and enjoy. The scene is so pleasing for the eyes and minds.

Photography ruined our relief period. We spend the time of our stay in the lawn with more photographs. Myself, Sreejith, Jibin, Prince, Sandeep, Praveen, Sanush, Haridas were all here giving different poses and mostly good and with only a few amateur photographs. Sanush played well here with his camera. Praveen and Sandeep marked their role. And myself too. I am not a bad photographer. Sreejith and Jibin gave a nice few shots. Among the remarkable posers were Dipesh, Vishnu, Prince and Vineeth.

But this is not for what we have come to Ooty. We can just sit and relax at Palghat itself. However tired we are, enjoy this tour to the maximum possible, we decided to wander over the garden.

The climate of Ooty was not bad. In fact it was cold. Though it was more light feeling the sun nearer, we did not feel much heat and the cold wind swiped out the heat. A centralized air-conditioned town, I felt.

Our walk was spotted with a few stops for stills. We saw the map of India with updated new states. The map was made up of different coloured small plants. As we moved on we have seen part of our team standing over a terraced water spot. Here we joined back with our team. When we climbed up we have seen another part of the team is a little more above, posing for photographs. It included ArunKJ, Jerin, Preman, Shajahan, Varun, Haridas. As we all started moving together, we saw some film making. People wandered with shooting setup. And the heroine, I really did not go near, was told of as not that beautiful. So we left it unnoticed (but not all, how can some guys leave that) and walked together.

In between Nandan diverted along with Lenin, wherever he saw anything of his liking to take photographs. Both will finish off and then join us. Yah! This curiosity has earned him the name Nishchel(Kilukkam movie famed) Nandan. But I really don’t know who gave that name.

Then we walked amidst different trees. Old and young. Broad and thin. A Japanese rose tree, slightly different from our roses, is in fact a tree rather than a plant and with no thorns. This place would be a good choice for flora lovers and botanical enthusiasts.

Some people restrained from moving further, out of fatigue. Among them are Shamna, Sankar and Maduri, Sajith and Sunitha. A few more people accompanied them. Not really because they are tired. But, to watch the film shooting and in particular, the female actor. Among them are Prince (will be the first always in these), Ajith, Yasar, Noushad, Vineeth. The girls, especially Sandhya, had a vigilant eye towards these guys, refraining them from doing mischievous.

We decided to climb further, in search of TODAMUND, out of curiosity. As we climbed up, we clicked to the maximum possible, under different trees. A variety of trees, from furcated to fortified ones. The taller ones are exceptionally attractive. Even after reaching the topmost point of the garden, we did not find TODAMUND. Haridas was in vain for he is the most suffered person climbing up there. So we started our way down the garden, being deceived. As we came down, Lenin and Nandan enquired about upside. We exaggerated TODAMUND. They too started their expedition in search of TODAMUND. Accompanying them are Jincy and Mithya. I don’t know whether they have found out TODAMUND or not. But really they utilized that for their photography just like what we did there.

Sandhya and Sujina joined us and they are not really interested in TODAMUND. We came down. The rest are already there. Then we planned to relax somewhere near the entrance. Here some people stayed back and the rest, we moved. All the girls, some guys, and the two couples stayed back. We came to where we left initially. Haridas, the critic, knocked down everyone irrelevant of their ages, kid or old, with his beleaguering comments. That was really funny. In particular, a kid, may be 2 years, with a camera focused us. Every time we pose for the photograph, he just turns back the camera. He did this again and again. At last the parents decided to leave the spot, may be out of Haridas’ funny comments on the kid. We asked the kid to take a photo. The kid’s father too requested him to do. Once again the kid did the same, by turning back the camera, after focusing us. At last he also deceived us like TODAMUND.

After almost vacating others from the spot, we had none left to tease. So, we decided to leave the garden and go to the bus. The other group was expected to arrive on time.

By the way, the rest of the team was enjoying the garden. They took more photographs from another part of the same lawn, where we relaxed. They also enjoyed their comments over the other members of the team.

Outside the garden, we bought carrots. Ooty carrots, very popular in South India. It is fresh and more sweeter. As we walked towards the bus we have taken tea. Oo-tea is really good. Ooty is also famous for cookies.

We waited in the bus, when the rest joined us. Since there is not much time left, we dropped the idea of visiting the lake. Then we asked the driver to stop over some beautiful landscapes, good for photography.

The bus stopped near a small hill, on its way downwards. One side of the hill is rich with tea gardens. A hanuman temple is situated over the hill. I had severe headache by then. So I just slept inside the bus, while the rest moved out.

A good number of photographs were taken from this cute place. Some people, who are really tired, held back from climbing over the hill. The two couples, Shamna, Shajahan, Abubucker also held back while the rest move towards the hill.

The steep slopes of the hill did really not scare them. They defied every difficult in climbing over the hill.

A few memories that happened in this hill, just as I’ve heard.

First, jincy has fallen down while walking on her way down. Then Yasar gave a pose sitting from the rock. Anyone who views that would really think the guy is afraid of climbing. Sreegesh and Nandan gave a beautiful shot by hiding under the tea plants, except for the face.

The first group has come down. The rest came down, a little later.

Then we started our journey towards Palghat.

Ajith has started his dance by then, along with Sreegesh and Anu. I almost felt vomiting. And moved towards the front of the bus. Then to shift my mind from that, I started dancing along with Ajith. But unfortunate is me. The bus stopped for a group photo, as requested.

Here came the happiest moment for Sandhya. I started vomiting in that place. Sandhya enjoyed this very much for she did not vomit fortunately and unusually (I do always tease her about her vomiting during any travel). This has made me the only person to vomit (though without consuming any liquor), as credited by Anu.

We gathered around the tea plants, for a group photograph. Not one, but as many, as you can see one in the cover page. ArunKV has symbolized himself in the photographs with a towel over his shoulders.

A few after shots accompanied us, before the journey downwards the hill.

The bus started, along with our dance. Now more members are there to dance, including the girls.

Tu hi mere shab hai….almost ended with being the only melodious song.

Followed it completely are songs, for a cracking dance.

The list increased with more dancers who missed it during the onward journey. ArunKJ, Prince, Sudeep, Lenin, Vishnu, Haridas and almost all are in the new addition.

Then girls have started Mithya, Jincy, Sandhya.

Sajith and Sankar danced with their pairs.

Sunitha, Sajith’s wife accompanied Sajith in a good dance.

At last, when the dance was about to crack up the night, the bus was stopped. There was a heavy traffic and the vehicles moved slowly. For almost an hour, there was no movement. After sometime, it was cleared and we started again. The traffic was due to a truck, which has become immovable. This time inside the bus, almost all are tired and the entertainment was stopped. Further there are some cracking comments from the back. Mostly all are slept, when we reached the restaurant for dinner.

It’s the time for Sreegesh’s departure. Sreegesh was given a warm farewell, but with a loud slogan, yelling Sreegesh.

Back to Palghat.

We reached Palghat, safely at around 12:00 A.M.

Organizer Anu escaped criticisms, due to the timely arrival while on return.

We thank the driver, Kader Hussain, for his good service.

Above all, once again we thank God, The Almighty, for gifting us such a wonderful tour.

  2. This is a great post with images of a beautiful tour to ooty. I really enjoyed reading your blog post on ooty tour.

Ooty is the capital town of the district of nilgiri. I would say that the climate in ooty is pleasant and is a great place for leisure tours. There are many places you can tour, such as the Botanical Gardens, Lamb's rock and Dodabetta Peak, Ooty Lake, Kodanadu's View Point, and also weekend trips like: Madumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Kotagiri, Kalhatty Waterfalls, Dolphin's Nose, Avalanche, Coonnoor, on tours to Ooty India.

Some of the tourist attractions of Ooty are Ooty Lake which was was built for providing an irrigation tank to the people of this region, Botanical Garden situated on the lower slopes of the Dodabetta peak and Kalhatty Falls which is located about 113 kilometers away from ooty.

Ooty is on the narrow gauge railway, connected to Mettupalayam (47 km), which is directly connected to Coimbatore and Chennai. The famous toy train connects Ooty with Mettupalayam and Coonoor. A good network of roads and national highways connect Ooty with all major towns and cities. There are regular bus services to and from Coimbatore, Trichy, Bangalore, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Mysore, Palghat, Calicut, Tirupati and other important destinations in South India. Ooty is also well connected with major cities of Kerala and Karnataka. Coimbatore, 105 km from Ooty, is the nearest airport.

You can opt for a 3 days ooty tour or a 4 days coimbatore ooty tour or a mysore ooty tour to enjoy this beautiful destination of charming hills and pleasant climate. I think it is during summer vacation most people are visiting this place. Ooty is also a honeymooners paradise in south India.

India is truly a great place with lots of diversity and is a unique place in the world. Indian tourism industry has performed well in the recent years. You can follow my updates on @india_tourism in twitter or in my india travel blog.
